Rugged Mountain Launches X14 Production Model

A year in the making, the production X14 is a bold hard-side, non-slide, split dry-bath, 14-foot flatbed statement from the team at Rugged Mountain RV. The X14 is the biggest non-slide demountable truck camper on the planet. Now ready to order.

Rugged Mountain X14 Truck Camper In Production

Last February, Rugged Mountain RV rolled out its latest project—the X14. Built for Class 5 trucks, the category-challenging 14-foot flatbed hard-side, non-slide, split dry bath camper was truly shocking. The sprawling design also begged the question—with floor space like this, who needs slide-outs?

Built for Jared and Candice Sund of Stable Camper, the prototype X14 debuted at the 2024 Quartzsite Truck Camper Rally and was seen at various overland events throughout the year. All the while, the Rugged Mountain RV team gathered X14 feedback from event attendees, Truck Camper Magazine readers, and interested customers.

One year later, the final evolved production X14 will be unveiled at the 2025 Quartzsite Truck Camper Rally. Only this time, Jesse Collinsworth, CEO of Rugged Mountain RV, is taking orders.

The Production X14

Rugged Mountain X14 Front And Side

Jesse is not being shy about the X14 improvements. As he bluntly stated in a phone conversation last week, the production X14 is, “…ten times better than the prototype”.

We can confirm that the X14 has undergone numerous advancements including all-electric components (minus a Timberline 2.0 diesel heater/water heater), a continuous flat floor (no step up into the rear dinette), the additional storage above the dinette, and a larger shower stall.

On the exterior, the production X14 now comes in your choice of three 3M vinyl color packages, features Rugged Mountain RV’s one-piece fiberglass nose cap, and Rieco-Titan’s remote electric jacks.

The roof has a whopping six 200-watt solar panels standard (1,200 watts total) with an option to add two additional panels for a total of 1,600 watts. You read that right.

Rugged Mountain X14 Kitchen And Dinette

Seating options in the production X14 dinette area have been expanded to offer four configurations: a traditional dinette, two recliners, a jack knife sofa, and a U-shape dinette.

The U-shape dinette is standard and the other dinette options are upgrades. All four dinette configurations can include an optional electric bunk for kids or grandkids.

The split mid-ship dry bath (shown above) has been reworked with a privacy door that can close off the main living area and a larger 32 by 24 inch shower stall.

Like all Rugged Mountain RV truck campers, the X14 cabinetry remains real wood (birch plywood). The X14 cabinet design now draws more inspiration from the Denali 3S with different finishes available.

Rugged Mountain X14 Expion 360

The battery system starts with one 368Ah Expion360 battery standard with upgrade options for up to three 450Ah batteries (1,350Ah total). A comprehensive Victron system is included with a 3,000 watt Victron MultiPlus inverter, GX touch panel, and a 50A DC-DC charger (with an option of 100A).

Other details include identical tank capacities to the Rugged Mountain Denali 3S triple-slide model; 80 gallons fresh, 77 gallons grey, and 35 gallons black.

Rugged Mountain X14 Compressor Refrigerator

The standard refrigerator is a 12-volt Furrion 8-cubic-foot model, but there are several refrigerator upgrade options. The furnace is a Timberline 2.0 diesel heater and water heater.

Rugged Mountain X14 Side View

The production X14 comes loaded with a few options on the menu. That stated, there is one significant option in development that is sure to pique the interest of the techies among us.

In Development: Garmin System

A cutting-edge fully integrated Garmin touchscreen system is optional. The Garmin system integrates and controls everything from camper operation and systems to road navigation, entertainment, and even security cameras.

Jesse explained that the Garmin system includes a remarkable level of monitoring and control including tank levels, electric awning operation, zone-specific light dimming, and remotely turning on the air conditioning for Fido. The system is controlled from a Garmin touch screen or your phone.

The Garmin system is still a bit ahead of its time as many RV component manufacturers have yet to incorporate the required RV-C (based on CANbus; Controller Area Network) protocol. As Jesse explained it, the RV industry is in the process of converting dumb appliances into smart appliances. He believes in the near future all RV components will have four wires; two for power and two for RV-C control.

In addition to the Garmin system, you can opt for a roof rub rail with exterior-mounted LED spotlights, exterior-mounted 360-degree security cameras, and voice control via Alexa AI (stereo, awning, and more).

Another interesting option is a rear metal skirt that gives the unit more of a traditional truck camper look and doubles as either additional storage or an outdoor kitchen. This last option is also still in development for the near future.
